A dentist helps you maintain your oral health with cleanings, exams, and preventive care, while an oral surgeon handles more complex procedures like wisdom teeth removal, dental implants, and jaw surgery. Oral and maxillofacial surgery requires years of advanced hospital training to treat issues involving bones, soft tissues, and facial structure. If you’re facing impacted third molars or need a bone graft, your dentist may refer you to a specialized oral surgeon.
You should see an oral surgeon for wisdom teeth removal if your third molars are impacted, causing pain, or have the potential to crowd your natural teeth. Oral and maxillofacial surgery ensures proper extraction to avoid infection, decay, or jaw issues. An oral surgeon uses cutting edge technology to remove wisdom teeth safely and comfortably, often before they erupt to avoid future complications and preserve long-term oral health.
Dental implants offer a more secure and permanent solution than traditional dentures. Implants integrate with your jawbone, providing a stable foundation for a natural looking smile and preserving your bone structure. An oral surgeon performs this procedure as part of advanced oral and maxillofacial surgery. Unlike dentures, implants function like natural teeth and help prevent the bone loss that can occur after tooth extraction, improving your long-term oral health.
Oral and maxillofacial surgery treats a wide range of conditions, from impacted wisdom teeth to jaw misalignment, facial trauma, and oral cancer. An oral surgeon can also correct birth defects like cleft palate or perform bone grafts to support dental implants. These procedures are typically more complex than routine dental care and often require cutting edge technology to ensure optimal results and restore both function and appearance.
Cutting edge technology allows oral surgeons to diagnose and treat issues with greater precision, safety, and comfort. At Elizabeth Oral Surgery Group, your oral surgeon uses advanced imaging and surgical tools for everything from wisdom teeth removal to dental implants. These innovations support minimally invasive techniques, reduce healing time, and help create a natural looking smile. Technology also improves outcomes in oral and maxillofacial surgery, making complex procedures more predictable and efficient.
