Oral and maxillofacial surgery addresses conditions that go beyond what routine dental care can resolve. From impacted wisdom teeth and missing teeth to jawbone deficiency, facial trauma, TMJ disorders, and oral pathology, these are cases that require surgical training most general dentists simply don’t have.

When your dentist refers you for oral surgery, or when you’re ready to schedule on your own, Legacy Oral Surgery and Implants is here. Our Elizabeth, NJ office serves patients throughout Union County, including Elizabeth, Newark, Linden, Rahway, Roselle, Hillside, and surrounding communities.

What sets our team apart begins with training. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons complete dental school followed by a minimum of four years of hospital-based surgical residency, rotating alongside residents in general surgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, and ENT, before they are eligible for board certification.

Our Elizabeth surgeons, Dr. Nancy Herbst, Dr. David Farkas, and Dr. Hillel Kaye — a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon — bring over 40 years of combined experience to this practice, treating more than 7,000 patients per year across our locations.

What Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Treats

Oral and maxillofacial surgery covers a wide range of conditions affecting the teeth, jaws, and facial structures. Patients come to our Elizabeth office for many reasons, including:

  • Impacted or painful wisdom teeth
  • Missing teeth requiring dental implant placement
  • Jawbone loss requiring bone grafting before implants can be placed
  • Full-arch tooth loss addressable with All-on-4 implants
  • Jaw misalignment and facial trauma, including fractures
  • TMJ pain and dysfunction
  • Oral pathology including cysts, growths, and lesions of the mouth and jaw

Many patients are referred by their general dentist. Others schedule directly. No referral is required.

A key advantage of choosing an oral surgeon over a general dentist for these procedures is in-office anesthesia capability. Our Elizabeth surgeons are credentialed to administer local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, IV sedation, and general anesthesia on-site.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are the only dental specialists trained in the full spectrum of anesthesia administration through hospital-based residency rotations with medical anesthesiologists. General dentists do not receive this training.

This means patients with dental anxiety, complex medical histories, or procedures requiring deep sedation can receive care comfortably in our Elizabeth office without a hospital referral. We also use cone beam CT (CBCT) 3D imaging on-site for precise surgical planning, particularly for implant placement, bone grafting, and impacted tooth removal.

Why Your Procedure Matters More Than You May Realize

Many dental procedures that sound routine carry meaningful surgical complexity beneath the surface. An impacted wisdom tooth may be positioned against a nerve, wrapped around an adjacent root, or sitting within the jawbone in a way that makes extraction genuinely surgical — not just a simple pull. A dental implant placed without adequate bone density or 3D imaging can fail prematurely. Bone grafting, sinus lifts, and full-arch reconstructions require not only surgical precision but the ability to manage sedation safely and respond to complications in real time.

Board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons are specifically trained for this. The American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) requires candidates to pass both written and oral examinations, submit documented surgical case experience for peer review, and maintain certification annually through continuing education, hospital privilege verification, and office anesthesia evaluation. Choosing a board-certified OMS means choosing a surgeon whose qualifications have been independently verified — not just by a dental school degree, but by ongoing peer review. At Legacy Oral Surgery in Elizabeth, our oral and maxillofacial surgeons — including board-certified surgeon Dr. Hillel Kaye — bring that standard to every procedure we perform, whether it is a single tooth extraction or a complex full-mouth reconstruction.
