What Is Platelet-Rich Fibrin and How Does It Speed Up Oral Surgery Recovery

Recovering from a tooth extraction, sinus lift, or bone graft comes with a familiar set of worries. How much swelling should you expect? How long before the discomfort fades? Will the surgical site heal the way it should? These questions matter because healing speed and comfort directly affect how quickly you get back to eating, talking, and living normally.

At Legacy Oral Surgery Group, we use platelet-rich fibrin, or PRF, to help support your body’s own healing process after many oral surgery procedures. PRF is made from a small sample of your own blood, so there is no foreign material involved, and it may help reduce swelling, lower infection risk, and support faster tissue and bone regeneration after your procedure.

What Is Platelet-Rich Fibrin?

Platelet-rich fibrin comes from your own blood. We draw a small sample, then spin it in a centrifuge that separates the blood into its individual components. What remains is a dense, gel-like concentration of platelets, growth factors, and white blood cells suspended in a fibrin matrix.

This matrix is placed directly into the surgical site, whether that is an extraction socket, a sinus lift area, or a bone graft. Because it comes from your own body, there is minimal risk of rejection or allergic reaction. The platelets and growth factors concentrated in PRF are the same ones your body already uses to heal wounds, just delivered in a much higher concentration exactly where you need them.

How PRF Differs From Platelet-Rich Plasma

You may also hear about platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, which is a related but distinct concentrate. PRP is spun at a higher speed and remains in liquid form, while PRF is spun more slowly, preserving more of the fibrin structure and resulting in a solid, gel-like consistency.

That structural difference matters clinically. A systematic review published by the National Institutes of Health found that this slower centrifugation process concentrates more growth factors and white blood cells within the fibrin matrix, which may translate to better healing support after oral surgery.

How PRF May Support Your Recovery

The growth factors released from PRF play a direct role in several stages of healing. They help stimulate new blood vessel formation, encourage soft tissue regeneration, and support the bone remodeling process after extractions or grafting procedures.

Patients who receive PRF after procedures like wisdom tooth removal or sinus lifts may notice a few practical benefits during recovery. These can include the following:

  • Reduced swelling and inflammation around the surgical site
  • Lower risk of dry socket following extractions
  • Faster soft tissue closure over the treated area
  • Support for new bone formation in graft and implant sites

These benefits do not replace careful surgical technique or proper aftercare, but PRF may give your body extra support during the early healing window when complications are most likely to occur.

Which Procedures Commonly Use PRF?

PRF has a wide range of applications in oral and maxillofacial surgery. We may recommend it after a tooth extraction, particularly for teeth with larger roots or when the socket needs extra support during healing.

It is also commonly used during sinus lift procedures, where PRF can support bone regeneration in the grafted area, and during bone grafting in preparation for dental implants. Our team evaluates each case individually to determine whether PRF makes sense for your specific procedure and health history.

What to Expect During Your Procedure

The process for obtaining PRF is straightforward and adds only a few minutes to your appointment. We draw a small blood sample using the same technique as a standard blood draw, then place it in a centrifuge while your surgical site is being prepared.

Once your extraction, graft, or other procedure is complete, we place the PRF directly into the surgical site before closing. Because the entire process uses your own blood, there is no additional recovery time associated with the PRF itself. You will follow the same post-surgical care instructions you would normally receive, and PRF works alongside those instructions rather than replacing them.
